Unveiling the Mystique of Moldavite: Where to Buy Moldavite, Is It Good For You and How To Use It

Unveiling the Mystique of Moldavite: Where to Buy Moldavite, Is It Good For You and How To Use It

Moldavite, a gemstone with an otherworldly allure, has captured the imagination of humans for centuries. Its unique origin, colour, and metaphysical properties have made it a sought-after gemstone among collectors, spiritual seekers, and those who appreciate its beauty.

This gem is often called the "tektite of transformation" due to its profound connection to celestial forces. Part of it's mystique comes from the various stories we hear about it...

A friend of a friend bought Moldavite, and they lost all their closest friends and broke up with their long-term partner.

Your cousin started wearing a Moldavite necklace, and their life completely transformed, and they became a whole new person.

A coworker had a Moldavite ring, and although good things were happening to them, they had debilitating headaches every time they wore it.

We frequently heard stories like these at our crystal store in Hamilton, Ontario. Although a great deal of mystery still surrounds this ancient specimen, in this blog post, we will share everything we know about the one and only Moldavite and answer your most burning questions...

  • Where does Moldavite come from?
  • Why is Moldavite expensive?
  • How to tell if Moldavite is fake?
  • Should you buy Moldavite online?
  • What is Moldavite good for?

The Cosmic Origin of Moldavite

Moldavite's story begins approximately 15 million years ago when a meteorite collided with Earth. The impact generated incredible heat and pressure, vaporizing the meteorite and the surrounding terrestrial material. As the molten material cooled and rained back to Earth, it solidified into a distinctive tektite – Moldavite.

A tektite is a type of natural glass formed when a meteorite collides with the Earth's surface. These glassy objects are often characterized by their unique shapes, smooth surfaces, and lack of crystalline structure.

Tektites are typically dark-coloured and can vary in size from small pebbles to larger, irregularly shaped pieces.

The word "tektite" is derived from the Greek word "tektos," which means "molten" or "melted." This name reflects the way tektites are formed during meteorite impacts. There are four stages of creation:

  1. Impact: When a meteorite strikes the Earth's surface at high velocity, it generates enormous energy. This energy causes the meteorite and the surrounding terrestrial rocks to heat up and melt.
  2. Ejection: The intense heat and pressure from the impact result in the ejection of molten material, propelling it away from the impact site. This molten material cools and solidifies as it travels through the atmosphere.
  3. Re-entry: The solidified molten material, now in the form of tektites, re-enters the Earth's atmosphere. During this process, it can acquire its characteristic shapes, ranging from rounded to irregular.
  4. Landing: Tektites eventually land on the Earth's surface, often distributed over a wide area from the impact site. They are typically found in strewn fields, which are regions where multiple tektites are scattered.

There are several major types of tektites, each associated with a specific impact event. Some well-known tektite types include Moldavite, which is related to an impact in the Czech Republic, and Australites, which are found in Australia. Another increasingly popular Tektite is Libyan Desert Glass, which is believed to be from an impact that occurred over 28 million years ago in the Great Sand Sea on the Egypt and Libyan border.

The primary source of Moldavite today is the southern part of the Czech Republic, specifically the Southern Bohemian region. However, smaller deposits have been found in Germany and Austria as well.

What Does Moldavite Look Like?

One of Moldavite's most defining characteristics is its colour. This gem exhibits various green hues, from pale and translucent to deep, vibrant green. Its surface is often pocked with unique, intricate patterns resulting from its rapid cooling and solidification. These surface features, known as "sculpture," make each piece of Moldavite genuinely one-of-a-kind. The average Moldavite is small, typically weighing between one and ten grams, although larger pieces exist.

What Are The Metaphysical and Spiritual Properties of Moldavite?

One of the most common questions we have heard as owners of a crystal shop is, "What does Moldavite do?"

Several subscribers to our Monthly Mystery Crystal Subscription Box email us, requesting they never receive a piece of Moldavite. Some are intrigued, and some are terrified of it!

Moldavite can bring many beautiful transformations and doesn't need to be feared. That said, I recommend considering the properties before working with it.

Moldavite has long been associated with many metaphysical and spiritual beliefs. Many believe Moldavite has a high vibrational frequency that can accelerate spiritual growth and transformation. Here are some of its most intense metaphysical properties:

Transformation and Spiritual Growth: Moldavite often catalyzes profound personal and spiritual changes. It is believed to assist in releasing old patterns, traumas, and limitations, allowing individuals to reach their true potential. This is why people become scared of it. A person in your life, whether a close friend or a romantic partner, is holding you back from reaching your true potential. Moldavite won't make them disappear, but it can help you grow and see things differently.

Connection to Cosmic Energies: Moldavite is thought to be a bridge between Earth and the cosmos due to its celestial origin. It enhances one's connection to higher realms, making it a popular meditation and energy work choice.

Protection: Some people use Moldavite as a protective amulet, believing its energy can shield them from negative influences and psychic attacks.

Heart Chakra Activation: Moldavite is closely associated with the heart chakra, and it is believed to open and activate this energy center, promoting love, compassion, and healing.

Enhanced Psychic Abilities: Moldavite is believed to amplify intuitive and psychic abilities, making it a valuable tool for spiritual practitioners.

It's important to note that just as with other crystals, your experience with Moldavite will be different from others. These highly individualistic experiences will be impacted by where you are in your life and how you use your Moldavite.

How To Use Moldavite?

There are several different ways you can work with Moldavite. One of the most common ways is with Moldavite jewellery. Moldavite's unique appearance makes it a popular choice for jewelry. Rings, pendants, earrings, and bracelets featuring Moldavite are highly sought after by those who appreciate its beauty and metaphysical properties.

If you have a single piece or a piece of Moldavite jewellery, you can use it during meditation or energy healing sessions to enhance your spiritual experiences and connect with higher states of consciousness.

You can also leave it in a safe place in your home. Moldavite has become a valuable collectible for gemstone enthusiasts. Just know that leaving it in your bedroom can cause you to have strange dreams or nightmares - it is not a great stone for sleep, so it is better to keep it in another room.

The Controversy Surrounding Moldavite

Despite its allure, Moldavite has been subject to controversy. Some individuals have reported intense and overwhelming experiences after working with Moldavite, including physical sensations, emotional upheaval, and vivid dreams. These reactions have led to debates about the stone's safety and suitability for everyone.

It's essential to exercise caution and mindfulness when working with Moldavite, especially if you are new to its energy. Start with smaller pieces and gradually build your tolerance to its vibrations. Like any powerful tool, using Moldavite with respect and intention is essential.

How to Care for Moldavite

Moldavite is a relatively durable gemstone, but it can still benefit from proper care:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft cloth to clean Moldavite. Avoid harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners, as they may damage the stone.
  • Storage: Store Moldavite away from direct sunlight and heat. Keeping it in a soft pouch or jewelry box is a good idea to prevent scratches.
  • Energetic Cleansing: Some believe that Moldavite benefits from energetic cleansing methods, such as placing it in moonlight, sunlight, or near other cleansing crystals like selenite or clear quartz.

Why is Moldavite so Expensive?

Moldavite's expense is driven by a combination of factors, including its rarity, unique origin, and popularity among collectors and enthusiasts.

It is relatively rare compared to other gemstones. The primary source of Moldavite is the Southern Bohemian region of the Czech Republic, with smaller deposits found in Germany and Austria. Due to its limited geographic distribution, the supply of genuine Moldavite is constrained. Further, in many of the locations, it is found it is illegal to mine it.

Additionally, its unique creation adds to its mystique and appeal, making it a coveted gemstone among those interested in tektites' esoteric, metaphysical, and spiritual properties.

Moldavite has gained popularity as a collectible gemstone, and collectors are often willing to pay a premium for high-quality specimens. Rare and larger pieces can command significantly higher prices. The increase in demand is partly due to its unique metaphysical and healing properties, including its ability to accelerate personal and spiritual growth. This perceived value adds to its demand and price.

The quality and size of a Moldavite specimen can significantly influence its price. Larger, well-shaped pieces with vibrant colour and minimal flaws are more valuable.

Sadly, due to its high value, there is a market for fake or imitation Moldavite. Buyers seeking genuine Moldavite are often willing to pay a premium to ensure authenticity and even certification, further driving up prices for verified specimens.

How to Tell If Your Moldavite Is Real or Fake?

Distinguishing between genuine Moldavite and fake or imitation Moldavite can be challenging, as there are various factors to consider, and some fake pieces can closely resemble the real thing. To help you identify genuine Moldavite, here are some tips and methods:

Buy from Reputable Sources: One of the most reliable ways to ensure you get authentic Moldavite is to purchase it from reputable sources such as established gemstone dealers, jewelry stores, or online marketplaces with good reviews and a history of selling genuine gemstones.

Price: Be cautious of Moldavite being sold at exceptionally low prices. Genuine Moldavite is relatively rare, and if a deal seems too good to be true, it may be a sign that the piece is fake.

Appearance and Texture:

    • Texture: Authentic Moldavite often has a unique texture with small pits, wrinkles, and irregular surface features. These are known as "sculpted" or "etched" characteristics and result from the rapid cooling of molten material during its formation.
    • Colour: Moldavite typically has a green colour. Be wary of Moldavite that appears too dark or too light, as this may indicate a fake.
    • Transparency: While Moldavite can vary in transparency, it is usually at least somewhat translucent. Completely opaque or overly clear specimens may be suspect.
    • Bubbles and Inclusions: Examine the piece for bubbles, inclusions, or foreign materials trapped inside. These are generally not found in genuine Moldavite.

Weight and Density: Genuine Moldavite has a specific gravity ranging from 2.3 to 2.5, which is relatively low compared to many other gemstones. You can measure the weight and compare it to the expected specific gravity, although this method may require specialized equipment.

UV Testing: Some Moldavite exhibits a fluorescence or phosphorescence when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. However, not all Moldavite displays this property, so the absence of fluorescence does not necessarily indicate a fake. Genuine Moldavite may appear yellowish-green under UV light.

Certification: If you are purchasing a high-value Moldavite piece, consider requesting a certificate of authenticity from a gemological laboratory. A certificate can ensure the stone's authenticity.

Expert Appraisal: When in doubt, consider seeking the opinion of a gemologist or expert specializing in Moldavite. They can use advanced testing methods and their expertise to determine authenticity.

You can absolutely find real, authentic Moldavite online. Just look for a reputable sources. Additionally, educate yourself about Moldavite's characteristics to develop a keen eye for authenticity.

Moldavite's journey from the cosmos to our planet, its captivating appearance, and its rich metaphysical associations make it a gemstone like no other. Whether you are drawn to it for its beauty, transformative potential, or celestial origins, Moldavite inspires wonder and curiosity in those who encounter it. As with any gemstone or crystal, Moldavite's actual value lies in the personal connections and experiences it fosters.
