Complete Guide to Rose Quartz: Meaning, Properties, Uses, and More

complete guide to Rose Quartz - Rose Quartz meaning, properties, uses and more

Rose Quartz is a crystal (mineral) known as the Stone of Love, appearing in gorgeous shades of pink.  Whether you are brand new to the world of crystals or are a seasoned crystal practitioner, Rose Quartz is a must-have!

The history of Rose Quartz

Rose quartz is a specific form of quartz ranging in color and transparency. It is commonly found in pale, soft pink but can also be found in lavender, blue or deep salmon and has a vitreous luster.

The beautiful pieces of rose quartz you will find in a crystal shop near you are harvested from larger, intricate raw pieces that are then broken down. They may then be tumbled or carved. Rose Quartz is a macro-crystalline mineral with a hexagonal crystal system, and although its physical appearance is stunning, its metaphysical properties are why Rose Quartz is so popular!

The History of Rose Quartz

Historians believe Rose Quartz has been used in jewelry since 800 BC. The Assyrians would craft Rose Quartz beads and string them into bracelets and necklaces. There are also reports of Rose Quartz beads being used in 7000 BC in Mesopotamia, and Ancient Romans, Egyptians, and Greek civilizations using it to create talismans.

Modern records show that Rose Quartz was mined in Mount Mica Quarry between 1913 and 1915. Mount Mica is a famous mine rich in various gems and minerals located in Maine, USA. Since then, Rose Quartz has been discovered and mined from locations around the world, with many of the most expensive pieces originating in Brazil.

Where Rose Quartz Comes From

Rose Quartz is found across the globe. Many of the highest-quality specimens are found in Brazil however it is also mined in Sri Lanka, Madagascar, India, Uruguay, South Africa, Germany, and the United States.

Rose Quartz Healing Properties

Rose Quartz is all about warm, loving, feminine energy! Known as the Stone of Universal Love or the Heart Stone, it opens your heart to receiving and giving more love.

What are the properties of Rose Quartz?

Rose Quartz increases self-love. You will find more compassion, grace, and understanding for yourself that will spill over into everything you do and your relationships with others. When we have love and compassion for ourselves, we can give more of it and attract the same from others. With greater self-love and self-care, you will find more harmony and balance in your life. Rose Quartz can enhance feelings of alignment, connectedness, and joy.

Rose Quartz also improves communication, understanding, and compassion in romantic relationships. It can also heal your heart from emotional wounds and trauma, helping you to move past these events and open yourself up to a healthy, loving relationship.

Whether you are looking to heal family relationships, wounds from lost friendships, strengthen the bond between you and your partner or love yourself more, Rose Quartz is an excellent crystal to keep in your home or wear as jewelry. It is ideal for manifesting friendship, self-love, romance, or soulmate connections.

When working with Rose Quartz, you can become attuned to its feminine goddess energy. It will uplift you, support you and surround you with an aura of compassion and love.   You can imagine Rose Quartz as possessing an infinite amount of love – no conditions, no judgment, no timelines. Let this inspire you to bring more of this into your life and those around you.

Rose Quartz For Zodiac Signs

Rose Quartz can be used for all Zodiac signs (sun, moon, rising) because of its balancing, loving properties; however, certain Zodiacs are especially suited for this loving crystal.

Taurus.  Rose Quartz is a birthstone for Taurus. Its soothing, supportive energy will help balance a Taurus during stressful periods. It can also help transform feelings of tension, jealousy, or anger into patience, compassion, and joy to restore emotional balance.

Libra. Rose Quartz can increase Libra’s confidence and clarity, helping them make decisions that align with their higher self. It will also help Libra’s better understand their emotions and the emotions of others, strengthening their communication and relationships.

Capricorn.  Rose Quartz will help Capricorns show themselves more love and compassion. As these individuals tend to be hard on themselves, rose quartz will give them the confidence boost and courage to take chances, accept “setbacks,” and achieve their goals.

How to Cleanse and Charge Rose Quartz

When you first get a new crystal and feel called to, cleanse and charge your crystal. Although the methods can be the same, cleansing is essentially clearing any stagnant, old energy that has built up, and charging your crystal amplifies its energy. Imagine your crystal as a battery; when it is fully charged, it has more power.

If another person has used your Rose Quartz, you used it for a crystal healing session, or you just got your crystal, you should cleanse it before using it. You don’t need to charge your Rose Quartz after every use but can do so once a month (e.g., full moon) or when you feel called to.

You can both cleanse and charge Rose Quartz in a few different ways.

Option 1: Water

You can place your Rose Quartz in a cup of water (or moon water) and let it soak for a short period of time. Remove it, dry it off and set your intentions.

Option 2: Salt

Salt is a great way to cleanse crystals. Fill a bowl or terrarium with Himalayan Salt and cover your crystal. Let it stay here for at least a few hours before removing it.

Option 3: Moonlight

Place your Rose Quartz on a window or outdoors on a Full Moon so your crystal can be charged with lunar magic. The moon possesses feminine energy just like your Rose Quartz! Remember to collect your crystal before the sun comes up, so it doesn’t lose color.

Option 4: Smoke

Smoke cleansing is a more active method of cleansing and charging. You can use an herb bundle like a lavender stick or incense. Place your crystal down, and gently wave the smoke over your Rose Quartz.

How To Use Rose Quartz

You can harness the loving properties and goddess energy of Rose Quartz in many different ways.  For example, you can wear a Rose Quartz bangle, keep a Rose Quartz tumble in your backpack or meditate with Rose Quartz.   If you want to learn more ways to use Rose Quartz, keep reading…

Meditating with Rose Quartz

Rose Quartz is excellent for meditation, especially when you want to address matters of the heart. Meditating with Rose Quartz can help attune you to its warm, loving energy if you wish to draw in more love or heal old emotional wounds. Before you begin, start by cleansing your crystal and space. You can do this with smoke, sound, or by holding your crystal in your left hand, closing your eyes, and focusing on energetic vibrations.

Meditating with Rose Quartz

With your eyes closed, inhale and exhale through your nose. As you inhale, visualize bright pink light circling you, breathing it in. Imagine the pink light filling your chest, creating a warm sensation. Then, as you exhale, visualize a dull grey light leaving your body. This dull light holds your fears, stress, and pain. Continue this, and eventually, imagine you exhaling all the dull grey light in your body – finally, it turns pink. You are filled with so much loving energy it overflows. As you go on with your day, this loving energy will pour into every communication, action, and relationship. You are attuned to the loving energy of Rose Quartz.

Rose Quartz in Your Home

Rose Quartz is a must-have crystal for your home. Although you can place it in any room, one of the best locations is in your bedroom. You can keep it on your altar (if you have one), dresser, or bedside table. Your bedroom may be the room where you want to draw in more romantic energy, or it could be the place you go when you want to unwind.   You can also place a small tumbled stone under your pillow at night to have sweet dreams and let go of the day's frustrations. When placing Rose Quartz in your home, remember not to keep it in direct sunlight. The sun can cause your Rose Quartz to become washed out, losing its pretty pink color.

Rose Quartz Jewelry

You can bring the warm, loving energy of Rose Quartz with you – everywhere you go! Rose Quartz rings, necklaces, and bracelets will help you attract greater self-love, acceptance, joy, and love.

Before wearing your jewelry, you need to set an intention for it. An intention states what you want your Rose Quartz to attract. For example, if you wish to increase self-love, confidence, and compassion, ask your crystal to bring more of this. Then, every time you look at your jewelry, thank your Rose Quartz jewelry for filling your heart and bringing in more love.

How to tell if Rose Quartz is real

Fake Rose Quartz isn’t very common, but it does exist. A reputably crystal shop won’t sell fakes and if you are buying Rose Quartz online, just do your research before checking out.   If you have a Rose Quartz crystal and aren’t sure if it is real or fake, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is it cool to touch?
  • Does it have air bubbles?
  • Is it heavier than glass?
  • Does it scratch glass?
  • Does it look too perfect?
  • Is the price too good to be true?

The answers to these questions will determine whether it is real or fake. You can read more in our blog post How to Tell If Your Rose Quartz Is Real.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have more questions about Rose Quartz? Here are the answers to some of the most common questions we get asked at our crystal store in Hamilton.

How much is Rose Quartz worth?

Unfortunately, there is no easy answer for this one – it depends!   The value of a Rose Quartz specimen depends on the quality, color, and clarity. Like a diamond, a Rose Quartz specimen that is more transparent (yet rich in pink color) is worth more. This is often referred to as “gem quality.” You will often see high-quality pieces used in jewelry. Further, Rose Quartz, which is richer in color and more “sparkly,” is considered to be worth more. For example,  if you see very pale pink tumbles, they would be valued slightly less than a bright pink, more transparent tumble.

La Madonna Rosa (The Pink Madonna) is the most expensive piece of Rose Quartz ever recorded. The specimen stands at 40 centimeters tall and has a Smoky Quartz center, surrounded by a halo of sparkling Rose Quartz. It is believed to have been first discovered in 1959 in Brazil but publicly acquired by a collector in 1972.   The specimen was not seen again for over twenty years until it surfaced again at the Tucson Gem & Mineral show in 1997. In 2013 it was sold for $662,550, setting a record for the sale of a mineral.

Can Rose Quartz go in water?

Yes, rose quartz can go in water, but it is best not to have it exposed to water for long periods unless it has been treated for such use. When Rose Quartz is kept in water for too long, it can cause the crystal to degrade and even crack.

Can Rose Quartz go in the sun?

Can Rose Quartz go in the sun?

It won’t melt or turn to dust if exposed to sunlight briefly, like when you wear it as jewelry; however, you shouldn’t leave your rose quartz in direct sunlight for prolonged periods. Sunlight can cause its pink color to fade.

Can Rose Quartz go in salt?

Yes, untreated Rose Quartz is safe in salt. That said, it is best not to use table salt as this can contain iodine, and don’t leave it immersed for too long.

Where should I keep Rose Quartz?

You can keep Rose Quartz wherever you like! You can wear it as a bracelet, keep it on your dresser, under your pillow, or tucked away in your purse.   Attract and attune to the loving energy of Rose Quartz where ever and whenever you like.

Is Rose Quartz toxic?

The toxicity of a crystal is a complex topic. When considering toxicity, it usually pertains to handling the crystal, cutting, and ingesting it.   Rose Quartz is perfectly safe to handle. You can meditate with it, wear it as jewelry or keep it in your bedroom with no risks.   However, those who work in lapidaries, cutting and carving Rose Quartz should be careful not to inhale or ingest any particles as this can be dangerous.
